Program channels for repeaters within 10 miles of your UV-5R. If you live in central Indiana, check out my list, or use repeaterbook.com.

Program in a channel with popular frequencies.

Then, set your device to scan. You should hear repeaters make periodic announcements every 10-20 minutes. You'll hear chatter during commute times.

During scheduled repeater chats (what we call nets), you can listen to groups of radio operators in your area check in, converse, plan for emergencies, and even buy and sell equipment.

The main thing is, just listen until you have that license!
