Easy, very inexpensive

A bare bones way to get going - as inexpensively as possible!

  1. Buy a Baofung UV-5R (~$20)

  2. Configure it and listen to activity

  3. Listen. (Don't transmit - yet!)

  4. Like it? Get a license

Slightly more money, but easier

This makes it easier to configure a radio if you're computer-savvy, but it costs a little more.

  1. Buy A Baofung UV-5R (~$20), programming cable (~$23), and better antenna (~$20)

  2. Install chirp (free) and use it to set up your radio.
    Use this starter file if you're in central Indiana

  3. Listen. (Don't transmit - yet!)

  4. Like it? Get a license
